Michigan voters oppose the elimination of private insurance in favor of a “Medicare for All” plan, but are split on repealing the Affordable Care Act, according to a recent poll published by the Detroit Regional Chamber.
Roughly 24 percent of Michigan voters said they strongly support Medicare for All, while just under 40 percent said they strongly oppose it. Medicare for All found most of its support in those who identified as “strongly Democrat,” who supported the plan by 57.5 percent.
But Michigan is more split on the idea of repealing the Affordable Care Act, with 34.3 percent of voters saying they strongly support its repeal and 34.5 percent strongly opposing it. Independent voters said they support the repeal by a margin of 45 to 35.8 percent.
The poll was commissioned by the Detroit Regional Chamber in conjunction with The Glengariff Group. Of the 600 participants, 60 percent were contacted by landline, and 40 percent were contacted by cellphone.
The poll also studied Michigan voters’ reactions to issues like tariffs, immigration, climate change, education, fixing the Sault Ste. Marie Locks, civility, and perception of racial equality. It also looked at which news sources voters were consuming.
Participants were also asked an open-ended question about what issue facing the nation they felt was most important. Slightly more than 18 percent of voters said their top concern was border security or immigration, 17.5 percent said the president, 10.7 percent said the economy and jobs, and 8.8 percent said health care costs and availability.
“The statewide survey shows that while there is a consensus among Michigan voters on major key issues, there is also some divisiveness across ideologies,” said Sandy Baruah, president and CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber in a statement. “We ask our elected officials and those who seek office to keep that front of mind between now and next November and hope that they focus on the vast majority of voters and not just a segment.”
